We would like to dedicate the winter/spring season of sound performances to him.

This new season at e-flux features many brilliant artists: We launch in January with Alice Henry and the Collapse of the Western Plateau, a tragedy by Elizabeth A. Povinelli, accompanied by Thomas Bartlett, DM Stith, and Sam Amidom. In February, there will be a solo performance by Kevin Beasley. March will feature Spirit Catchers by Annea Lockwood, accompanied by Adrian Rew, Liz Phillips, Sam Green and Sanna Almajedi. Finally, in April there will be a performance by Jad Atoui and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe.

Alice Henry and the Collapse of the Western Plateau, a live performance by Elizabeth A. Povinelli, Thomas Bartlett, DM Stith, and Sam Amidom, is a tragedy centered on the disavowed violence of extractive capitalism. It is set in a “post-collapse” world, where the distorted remnants of European sciences, industries, theologies, and armed forces have fallen. The sound design draws on Gregorian and Byzantine chants, as well as United States Christian devotionals, with elements referencing machine and earth sounds—including massive excavators, MRI machines, sounds of the inner earth. Neither apocalyptic nor redemptive, Alice Henry and the Collapse of the Western Plateau stages the stubborn sadism of western forms of knowledge, politics, and economy, and the irreducible difference between myth and rationality, as all and sundry take a bite out of Alice Henry. Kevin Beasley lives and works in New York. He received his BFA from the College for Creative Studies, Detroit in 2007 and his MFA from Yale University School of Art, New Haven, CT in 2012. Beasley’s practice spans sculpture, photography, sound, and performance while centering on materials of cultural and personal significance, from raw cotton harvested from his family’s property in Virginia to sounds gathered using contact microphones. Beasley alters, casts, and molds these diverse materials to form a body of works that acknowledge the complex, shared histories of the broader American experience, steeped in generational memories. Spirit Catchers with Annea Lockwood

Spirit Catchers is a live performance by Annea Lockwood. The participants of the performance: Liz Phillips, Sam Green, Sanna Almajedi and Annea Lockwood will be bringing an object that they have possessed for many years—something sentimental that holds a lot of meaning for the owners. They will then share stories about the objects while their voices are mixed together by Adrian Rew. The performance will be followed by a short talk between Lockwood and the participants. Jad Atoui is a Beirut-based sound artist and improviser. He composes and performs electronic and electro-acoustic music and has worked with musicians like John Zorn, Pauline Oliveros, Laurie Anderson, Chuck Bettis, and Anthony Sahyoun. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is an artist, curator and composer that works primarily with, but not limited to voice and modular synthesizer for sound works in the realm of spontaneous music.
